BACKGROUND
On October 8, 2018, the City Manager's Office received a request for funding the De Anza High School Choir from Stephanie Rios, Choir Director of Visual and Performing Arts Department at De Anza High School. Of the 71 students,13 have been verified as San Pablo residents.

Ms. Rios stated the requested funds of $325 would be used to purchase Soprano recorders, method books and scores, and that the materials would introduce and reinforce basic musicianship skills through Kodaly methodology with the purpose of preparing the singers to sing music in the intermediate and difficult levels. According to the Music Educators Journal, the Kodaly method is a research-based method proven to "improve intonation, rhythm skills music literacy and the ability to sing in increasingly complex parts. Outside of music, it has shown to improve perceptual functioning, concept formation, motor skills, and performance in other academic areas such as reading and math."

Specifically, the materials to be purchased with the funds are for Soprano recorders, method books and scores which have a life expectancy of more than 10 years.

The Fiscal Agent is De Anza High School and has been verified as a 501(c)(3) organization.
