BACKGROUND

On September 24, 2018 the City Manager received a letter from Ms. Lorna Padia Markus, Great Futures Breakfast Chair for the Boys & Girls Club of Contra Costa, in El Sobrante. The Boys & Girls Clubs of El Sobrante and The Diablo Valley unified as one organization in 2017 in support of a vision to serve more youth with a greater impact throughout Contra Costa County. Their breakfast event “Open the Door to a Great Future” will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Crockett Community Center in Crockett, CA.  The Master of Ceremonies is Dick Callahan, the current announcer for the Oakland A’s and former announcer for the Golden State Warriors.  The Keynote Speaker is Dave Stewart, MLB All-Star and former member of the Boys & Girls Club.  Attendees will also have an opportunity to hear inspiring stories from community and business honorees as well as the youth of the year candidate. 

 

Boys & Girls Clubs of America began in 1860 with three women in Hartford, Connecticut - Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin and Elizabeth Hammersley. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. With character development as the cornerstone of the experience, the Club focused on capturing boys’ interests, improving their behavior and increasing their personal expectations and goals. A cause was born and 157 years later the Boys & Girls Club provides students a safe place to go after school and during the summer while providing a positive and enriching experience that places students on a path to success.

 

This report requests that the City Council of the City of San Pablo authorize a $2,000 sponsorship to the “Open the Door to a Great Future” event.  Sponsorship includes eight (8) tickets to the fundraising breakfast event, recognition on press releases, website as well as on the event program material.

 

 

FISCAL IMPACT

A total of $30,000 has been budgeted and earmarked for Event Annual Sponsorship for FY2018/19 under the Adopted FY 2018/21 Quadrennial Operating Budget - City Council Department (100-1110-44050). The authorized sponsorship in the amount of $2,000 will be deducted from this expense balance leaving a remaining balance of $10,100 for the remainder of FY 2018/19 period for future sponsorships by the City Council.
