BACKGROUND

At the July 2, 2018 City Council meeting, Andrew Wilke, the band teacher at Richmond High School, along with two Richmond High School students, requested a donation from the City Council to allow band students to participate in the upcoming Hayward-La Honda Music Camp being held July 21-28, 2018 in La Honda, California.  The City Council subsequently took formal action to direct the City Manager to bring the item back as a agendized action item on July 16, 2018 to allow Council consideration of it.

The Hayward-La Honda Music Camp is a non-profit organization that challenges students in creating and developing the students’ desire to learn music, which is accomplished through a program of study, concentrated rehearsal, performance, recreation and general camp life. The camp’s mission is to inspire young people to achieve their best musically, to enjoy a great social/recreational experience and take home memories that will last a lifetime. Students also return home inspired and confident in their ability to learn and play musical instruments. (<http://www.lahondamusiccamp.org/index.html>)  After the camp, those students who attended are then able to assist in teaching the remaining students what they learned at the camp.

Staff has received the executed W-9 Form from Hayward-La Honda Music Camp.

Out of the ten students attending, two are San Pablo residents. Cost of the sponsorship for the two San Pablo residents are $700 per student, for a total of $1,400. A total of $30,000 has been budgeted and earmarked for Event Sponsorships for FY2018/19 under the adopted FY2018-21 Quadrennial Operating Budget - City Council Department (100-1110-44050).

FISCAL IMPACT

A total of $1,400 will be deducted from the FY2018/19 Event Sponsorship, leaving a balance of $22,500.
