BACKGROUND

Community Schools (CS) is a strategy aimed at closing the opportunity gap to strengthen the abilities of our students, families and community. CS looks to attain and maintain the quality of life that contributes to healthy homes and a community in which all learn and are productive members.

The Community Schools Initiative (CSI) in San Pablo creates places where school, city and community stakeholders come together to provide diverse, mutually-aligned resources to assist the academic, social, civic and health needs and achievement for our students, their families and the community.

The San Pablo Community Schools Initiative is now renamed the San Pablo Beacon Community Schools Initiative (SPBCSI) and all associated aspects of the initiative will reflect the name change as part of the work with the Youth School and Community Partnerships division.

On May 3, 2018, San Pablo staff was invited to apply for a summer grant opportunity from the Richmond Community Foundation. Due to timing (short turnaround and grant deadline being less than two weeks from the date we received notification), staff was unable to bring the item before City Council for approval prior to the application due date.

On May 23, 2018, staff received notification that the City of San Pablo was awarded $4,000 in grant funding from The Richmond Community Foundation. In order to align with the work that is concurrently happening with our collaborative efforts with the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), staff will be utilizing these grant funds to provide supplies and support to one of our existing contracted Lead Agencies (BACR) from the Team For Youth Grant Program and as part of the SPBCSI. Funds will be used specifically for Camp P.R.I.D.E., a summer camp held in July with a focus on literacy and reducing summer learning loss.

FISCAL IMPACT

This resolution increases the revenue and expenditure totals for the Quadrennial Adopted Budget by $4,000 each for FY 2018/19.  The City would accept $4,000 of grant funding from the Richmond Community Foundation into the City’s General Fund (100-5110-39906) for FY 2018/19 and then would appropriate said amount ($4,000) to Youth, School and Community Partnerships budget (100-5110-44050-RCF-001).
