BACKGROUND
In 2001, the City took ownership of the Gateway Archway Sign (Archway Sign) on San Pablo Avenue by College Center. The Archway Sign is comprised of two stucco clad towers connected by a steel archway. In 2009, maintenance staff observed water infiltration and extensive damage on both towers. In 2010, staff retained the services of Ratcliff Architects to do an assessment of the Archway Sign (Assessment). While there was not a concern of imminent collapse, there was water intrusion and deterioration identified by this assessment.

Economic Development/Project Management Standing Committee Review
On January 26, 2017, staff reviewed demolition and reconstruction of the Archway Sign with the Economic Development and Project Management Standing Committee (Standing Committee) consisting of Councilmembers Cruz and Kinney. The Standing Committee instructed staff to look into demolishing and reconstructing the Archway Sign and also to explore the possibility of erecting gateway signs at the various gateways into the City.

The proposed resolution authorizes the City Manager to solicit public input on the matter by allowing the City Manager to conduct an online survey regarding the Archway Sign as well as proposed gateway signs throughout the City.
