Building a Healthy Community is a major policy goal in the recently adopted City Council Priority Work Plan FY 2025-27, adopted April 7, 2025.

BACKGROUND

National Autism Awareness Month was first established in April 1970 by the Autism Society of America to promote awareness, inclusion, and support for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The initiative aimed to educate the public about autism, advocate for early diagnosis and intervention, and foster acceptance of neurodiversity. Over the years, the focus has evolved from mere awareness to active advocacy, encouraging policies that support individuals with autism in education, employment, and healthcare. Today, organizations, communities, and individuals participate in events, fundraisers, and social campaigns throughout April to highlight the experiences of autistic individuals and push for a more inclusive society.
