Building a Healthy Community is a major policy goal contained in the FY 2025-27 City Council Priority Workplan, effective April 7, 2025.
BACKGROUND
Since 1987, the month of October has been nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), with Congress formally designating it in 1989. The observance serves as an important reminder of the ongoing efforts to raise awareness, support survivors, and work toward the prevention of domestic violence in all its forms. Domestic violence-also referred to as intimate partner violence-affects people of every background, including women, men, children, and elders. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, economic, sexual, and even digital abuse, impacting individuals, families, and entire communities.
In California, domestic violence remains a significant public safety and human services concern. Many cities and counties throughout the state formally recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month through proclamations and resolutions that highlight the importance of prevention, education, and support for victims and survivors. These local efforts also acknowledge and uplift the work of community organizations and service providers who dedicate their resources to assisting those affected by domestic violence and promoting safe, healthy relationships.
