Build a Healthy Community: Foster College and Career Readiness, Education, Youth Leadership and City/Contra Costa College/WCCUSD Partnership is an adopted policy item under the FY 2023-25 City Council Priority Workplan, effective May 1, 2023.

BACKGROUND

On February 12, 2024, the City Manager received an email from the Culinary Academy Team at Contra Costa College, requesting sponsorship of the Contra Costa College Culinary Arts Final 15th Annual Food & Wine Event scheduled on Sunday, April 21, 2024.

The event is an open community event, non-exclusive, which benefits the current Culinary Arts Scholarship Program at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. The Culinary Arts Department is one of several financially independent vocational programs at Contra Costa College. Monies raised by the Food & Wine Event provide the additional funding necessary for the comprehensive program of study and are especially designated for culinary scholarships to study abroad. Previous fundraising efforts made it possible to support more than 100 students to study abroad. The goal for this year is to send 10 deserving culinary students to Italy for a transformative two-week immersion program. The possibility to study abroad enriches students with history, architecture, and more importantly, first hand encounters with authentic cuisine, while being immersed in a rich culture renowned for its food.

The San Pablo Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors is set to approve a similar request for event sponsorship for $2,500.

Staff recommends that the City Council authorize by Resolution the event sponsorship and the official use of the City’s Logo for event materials and promotional activities by Contra Costa College for the purposes of this community event.

FISCAL IMPACT

A total of $30,000 has been budgeted and earmarked for Special Event Annual Sponsorships under the Adopted FY 2023-24 General Operating Budget - City Council Department (100-1110-44050).  The authorized sponsorship in the amount of $2,500 will be deducted from this expense balance leaving a remaining balance of $10,500 for the remainder of FY 2023-24 period for future sponsorships by the City Council.
